INTRO

buildJUSTLY is committed to closing the gap between underrepresented communities and large tech companies. Helping these communities feel included when the products and services they use every day are being developed.

RESEARCH PURPOSE

The goal of this study was to understand how members of the Hispanic community are currently using technology, for their personal and business purposes.

MY ROLE

I was brought on this study project to help synthesize all the research data collected through interviews and surveys. I also created graphs from the data as well as designs for a responsive default home page mock up.

SYNTHESIZING QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH

Surveys were provided in both English and Spanish, and over half taken in Spanish.

It was a challenge having to translate the data into English and make sure it was translated over correctly. Google translate worked well but not 100% accurate.

September 2021 - January 2022

  • 5 - 10 minute online surveys

  • 534 total responses (107 valid)

  • Distributed over email newsletters and Spanish language news media outlets

SYNTHESIZING QUALITATIVE RESEARCH

Interviews were conducted in whichever language the participant felt more comfortable with as well as preferred method, either phone or Zoom call.

Getting these interviews translated into English was much more challenging than the surveys. We had to get it transcribed, read through and double checked by the interviewer to make sure the context was correct.

DESIGN FOR PHASE 2

We recommended continuing to validate our research with design testing. Designing a default home page that would be catered to SMB owners, giving them resources, providing important tutorial videos, and building a community.
 

  • Starting with mobile first since our data showed most interaction was through mobile devices

  • Starting in Spanish to meet the existing users whee they are already most comfortable
